A $5 million cash prize to spend 50 days in an empty room— how hard could that be? This is the question posed by writer/director Mukunda Michael Dewil in the high-concept intimate drama “The Immaculate Room,” starring Emile Hirsch and Kate Bosworth.

“The Immaculate Room” calls to mind other projects like Joseph Kosinski’s experimental drug testing drama “Spiderhead,” the sci-fi two-hander “Passengers,” and there are even shades of “Squid Game” with the big cash prize attached, though the scenario is far less violent. Or is it?

Kobe Bryant's widow Vanessa testified she was only beginning to grieve the loss of her husband and their 13-year-old daughter in a helicopter crash when she was faced with the fresh horror of learning that deputies and firefighters had shared photos of their remains. Bryant cried frequently during the three hours she spent on the witness stand in Los Angeles federal court Friday. She's suing LA County for invasion-of-privacy over the photos. She testified that they have left her living in fear that they may surface publicly and her daughters may see them on social media.

A jury has awarded $50,000 to a northern Virginia landlord who was shot three times with a stun gun when sheriff’s deputies wrongly arrested him following a tenant's complaint. Matthew Souter of The Plains was arrested at his home in 2018 after a tenant in his 19th-century farmhouse claimed he violated a protective order by shutting off her utilities. But the protective order only barred Souter from committing acts of violence against the tenant. A federal judge in Alexandria ruled the arrest was invalid and Souter had a legal right to resist. The judge said any force used on a wrongful arrest is excessive. A jury on Thursday decided $50,000 was the appropriate amount of damages.

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto had surgery to repair his left rotator cuff and bicep. The team says Votto should be able to participate in spring training and be ready for the 2023 season. Votto, a six-time All-Star and 2010 NL MVP, hit just .205 this season with 11 homers and 41 RBIs. He has one year left on his contract that includes a club option for 2024. He turns 39 next month.

SEATTLE — Two thousand miles was a long way to travel for one series of football that lasted 10 plays and less than six minutes. But Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields at least had a few positives to review during the trip back from Seattle on Thursday night.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has announced that the emergency declaration in place banning homeless camps near high-crash corridors will expand to designated safe walking routes used by school-aged children. KOIN-TV reports the declaration bans camping along “priority routes to and from schools” and near school buildings. Clearing homeless encampments will also be prioritized in areas around schools. Wheeler noted children, specifically those in elementary and middle school, are a vulnerable group that could be harmed by trash and biohazards frequently found in areas where people lacking permanent shelter are living, often in tents.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday accused the Russian leader of launching a “brutal attack” on Ukraine in an imperialist, revanchist violation of national borders. Macron spoke hours after a phone call with Vladimir Putin. Macron tried tirelessly but unsuccessfully to prevent the invasion and long vaunted the importance of dialogue with Putin. The French president has grown increasingly critical of the Russian president as the war bears on. He warned French citizens that the resulting energy and economic crisis confronting Europe isn’t over. He called it “the price of our freedom and our values.”

A five-year review by U.S. officials has determined that Endangered Species Act protections for ocean-going salmon and steelhead that reproduce in the Snake River and its Idaho tributaries must stay in effect. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fisheries division review released Thursday found that steelhead, spring and summer chinook, sockeye and fall chinook that return to Idaho on rivers from the Pacific Ocean should retain current government protections. The agency says threats from climate change increase the urgency improving fish passage at hydropower dams and restoring fish habitats. The protections limit fishing and how dams are operated on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo has won his share of football games against Army, and last year’s victory may have been a particularly crucial one for his program. The Midshipmen were finishing up a second straight losing season when they won the most important game on their schedule. Now Navy hopes that 17-13 triumph over Army can be a turning point for a team that seemed to need one. Navy has endured back-to-back sub-.500 seasons for the first time since going 11-45 from 1998-2002.

The Education Department has terminated federal recognition of an accrediting agency that oversees mostly for-profit colleges, placing in jeopardy the survival of schools that serve about 5,000 students. The decision bars schools certified by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools from participating in federal student aid programs unless they can get certified elsewhere. Schools will have 18 months to find new accreditation. Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal said Friday that 27 schools would be affected, although three already are in discussions with other agencies. Department officials did not provide the names of the schools.

Republican Senate candidate Blake Masters says he hopes Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will back his close campaign in Arizona. Masters on Friday struck a magnanimous tone toward the GOP leader he fiercely criticized during the primary. Masters has softened the harder edges of his confrontational style and moved toward the center on key issues since emerging atop a crowded GOP field in this month’s primary. He’s relying on deep-pocketed donors and national Republicans to make up for a severe financial deficit against Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly. Masters spoke to The Associated Press a day after McConnell suggested that Republican efforts to win control of the Senate could be imperiled by lackluster candidates

A Mexican immigrant was sentenced to 38 years in prison in the fatal shooting of a convenience store clerk during a 2015 robbery in Arizona. Prosecutors had initially sought the death penalty against Apolinar Altamirano in the attack on Grant Ronnebeck. But a court later ruled prosecutors couldn’t pursue his execution because Altamirano is intellectually disabled. The 21-year-old clerk was fatally shot over a pack of cigarettes at the store in Mesa. His death was cited by former President Donald Trump and other Republicans in complaints about crimes being committed by immigrants in the U.S. illegally. Studies suggest immigrants are less likely to commit crime than people born in the U.S.

The Chicago White Sox have signed Elvis Andrus for the remainder of the season, adding a veteran shortstop with All-Star Tim Anderson sidelined by a finger injury. Chicago also optioned infielder Lenyn Sosa to Triple-A Charlotte before its game at Cleveland.

Javier Bardem is confident that audiences in America will enjoy “The Good Boss” as much as those in Spain when the film arrives in the U.S. later this month. The satire on corporate corruption opens August 26 in New York and Los Angeles before a nationwide rollout, after winning six Goya Awards — Spain's equivalent to the Oscars — and shortlisted to the Academy Award for best international feature film. Bardem plays the owner of an industrial scales manufacturing business that goes to great lengths to solve any problems from his workers. He says the story's global appeal has been apparent by audience reactions during its Oscar campaign and its theatrical run in Spain.

Experience is No. 25 BYU’s biggest strength entering its final season as an independent before joining the Big 12 in 2023. Several key veteran playmakers will lead the offense, including quarterback Jaren Hall, tight end Isaac Rex, and receivers Gunner Romney and Puka Nacua. BYU used the transfer portal to find a capable successor for Tyler Allgeier in the backfield, bringing in Cal's Christopher Brooks. BYU opens the season at South Florida on Sept. 3.

People who picked up the phones at the Mattapoisett fire and police departments said no one was available to comment. It was unclear if anyone was hurt. The area of the fire was part of a National Weather Service warning Friday of elevated fire risk due to drought and high winds. It sent a plume of dense black smoke over southeastern Massachusetts.

New Orleans has quietly moved a cannon owned by a unit that fought for the Confederacy out of a French Quarter park to a Louisiana National Guard museum. The pocket park overlooks Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral. The renaming proposal did not get any opposition in two online forums.

During 11-on-11 team drills Jets defensive lineman Bradlee Anae got into it with a Falcons player and appeared to throw some punches. The team drills on that field were paused for a few minutes before practice ran clean the rest of the way.
