arrived on the market, designed by VESA, made up of AMD, Apple and Nvidia, among others.The goal was also similar, here too sound transmission and DVI compatibility were among the mandatory elements.The HDMI port has 19 pins, while the DisplayPort has 20 pins, so there is not a huge difference from this point of view, but in operation it is even more.The original HDMI interface uses a system similar to DVI.That is, it transmits the signal with the help of technology called TMDS, which transmits the three color channels at a certain pixel clock on the cable.The receiver in the monitor converts this back into an image.In the first period, this pixel clock was 165 MHz, which was just enough to drive a 1920×1200 resolution, 60 Hz monitor.TMDS – 3 color channels and the pixel clockIn the first period, thanks to the higher pixel clock, DVI had a slight advantage, but now this has been raised to a value of around 600 MHz in the case of HDMI, significantly overtaking its advantage.Nowadays, even 4K/120 Hz is no longer an obstacle.DisplayPort is not used by TMDS mentioned above.We could also say that DisplayPort is the Ethernet cable of the display world.The comparison is not accidental, as DisplayPort cables practically transmit audio and video in packets.That is why DVI compatibility sometimes required an active converter, the previously mentioned plans were not fully fulfilled.In the first period, DisplayPort proved to be clearly better in data transmission, but today there is practically no difference between the two competitors in this field, either can achieve 4K60FPS without any problems.60 Hz with 4K resolution can be enough for any kind of content consumption, but in the case of games, the 120 Hz image refresh can already sell out.Just as we cannot forget that 240, 360 or even 500 Hz panels appeared at lower resolutions, which also require an amazing data transfer speed.Often an older HDMI cable or connector is the limiting factor, in the case of DisplayPort we may encounter fewer limitations during everyday use.HDMI to DP |Version numbers and resolutionsHowever, based on the table above, we can get an excellent idea of ​​what kind of connector and cable we will need, let's talk about any standard.It is clear that DisplayPort started supporting 4K/60 Hz or 1080p/240 Hz much earlier, but we don't have to worry about picture errors with HDMI 2.0 either.However, it is important to always check the specifications of the TV/Monitor, the specifications of the ports on the video cards and the data of the cable used on the websites of the manufacturers and distributors.It's no use finding HDMI 2.1 on the TV and the monitor, if the cheap-looking cable we bought was made for the 1.4 standard.All three components (connectors and the cable) must know the standard we want to use.By 2022, we have reached the point where the most modern video cards (Radeon 5000, 6000, RTX 3000) support the HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 standards.For now, DisplayPort 2.0 only exists on paper, we cannot really meet it in the real world.At the moment, HDMI 2.1 might be your best friend if you're just focusing on resolution and refresh, for example between a 120Hz OLED TV and a PS5 or PC.At a lower level, 360 Hz is not an obstacle either, but 120 Hz will work even with 4K.If a 120Hz 4K image is not important, DisplayPort (1.4) can also satisfy all needs.Just as we must not forget that AMD FreeSync / Nvidia G-Sync support requires a DisplayPort connection.So we cannot make a clear decision, both standards have one advantage over the other.It is important, however, that we really have to make sure that all three components support the given standard, it is not worth saving on the cable either, because there is a good chance that we will
